Saudi Arabia breathes new life into old oil-rigs

The Kingdom unveils yet another ambitions megaproject THE RIG, an oil rig-inspired adventure resort set in the Arabian Gulf..

Initially announced back in 2021 by the country’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) the masterplan inspired by the countries rich oil ad gas heritage is to redefine the sea sports and leisure experience.

Located 40 km from the coastline near Al Juraid Island and the Berri Oil Field in the Arabian Gulf, the entertainment project was originally expected to span an area of more than 150,000 square meters. However, the size of the “extreme park, an entirely new playground of adventure,” as described by the OPDC, has now doubled to a gross floor area of over 300,000 square meters.

The project will be developed by PIF’s subsidiary the Oil Park Development Company (OPDC), under its CEO Raed N. Bakhrji, who brings more than 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry.

THE RIG is expected to attract over 900,000 annually, appealing to a wide range of domestic, regional and international audiences, including adrenaline seekers, explorers, balanced holiday makers, and relaxation seekers.

THE RIG will feature a range of hospitality, leisure, entertainment and accommodation options including three hotels totaling 800 rooms, along with 11 restaurants, an extreme sports and adventure park, a world-class marina, a diving center, an amusement park, splash park, an E-sports center, an immersive theater and multi-purpose arena and helipads.

The project is set to be launched in 2030 in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative.
